Sugar Science

SugarScience serves as the authoritative source for evidence-based scientific information on sugar and its impact on health. Developed by a team of health scientists at the University of California, San Francisco, the site compiles insights from over 8,000 scientific studies, focusing on the most robust evidence regarding diabetes, heart disease, and liver disease. SugarScience aims to bridge the gap between medical research and the public, empowering individuals and communities to make informed health choices.

 

Food Industry Studies

Food Industry Documents

The Food Industry Documents Archive, created by the UCSF Library in collaboration with the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, offers an in-depth look at the food industry’s impact on public health. Initially funded by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation and the Samuel Lawrence Foundation, this archive provides critical insights into food industry practices, particularly those related to sugar. The scope of the archive is expanding to encompass a broader range of food-related topics.

Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Policy - Our team's work on sugar-sweetened beverage taxes in Northern California has promoted the establishment of soda taxes in Berkeley, San Francisco and Santa Cruz, California.

Prevention Strategies

Our team engaged in regulatory discussions on child oriented prevention strategies, preventing unhealthy diets in children. Broaden the lens we engaged in how to navigate the food system and food environment, and consideration of risks associated with cannabis. Other work included science informed food policy in schools and workplaces, and consultations with the World Bank.

Sutter Health - This 5-year, prospective randomized trial investigates the impact of reduced access and educational interventions for reducing intake of sugar-sweetened beverages within five Sutter Health System Hospitals in Northern California.
